Its always a good plan to make a backup of your .map file every once in a while.
It might be that your map file got corrupted somehow. You can try to open the .map file with a text editor and see if you can find an issue. The structure is fairly trivial but there is a lot of course, I would suggest to look at the start and end of the file.
